For newly admitted students at a university far from home, finding accommodation becomes a priority. The search for an apartment or a university room may seem complex, but with the right steps, it becomes more manageable.
The first step is to gather all necessary documents: identification, proof of income, and a guarantor are often required. Be sure to research the different options available, whether it’s university residences, shared accommodations, or private studios. Each option has its advantages and disadvantages in terms of cost, proximity, and comfort.

Prepare and submit your student social file (DSE)
The student social file (DSE) is an essential step for any student wishing to benefit from a social criteria scholarship or accommodation in a university residence. This file is completed exclusively on the site messervices.etudiant.gouv.fr. It must be completed between March 1 and May 31 each year. Students must provide their personal, family, and financial information.
Necessary documents
- Identification
- Proof of parents’ income
- School certificate
For a housing application, the DSE also allows you to obtain the CROUS tenant code, essential for accessing university residences managed by CROUS. The student social file also allows for the application of a social criteria scholarship, paid in ten monthly installments from September to June.

Financial aid and guarantees
Students can apply for various financial aids to alleviate their rental burden, such as APL (Personalized Housing Assistance) provided by CAF. The Visale scheme, managed by Action Logement, replaces the student rental guarantee (CLE), thus facilitating access to housing.
